BUNIONS

Toes Transparent_edited.png

Bunions are often painful and is a common foot condition, especially among women. They can make walking and wearing certain shoes uncomfortable, but with the right care and management, symptoms can often be relieved.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. The big toe gradually bends towards the smaller toes, creating a sharp angle with the first metatarsal (the long bone in the foot). This misalignment causes pressure and friction inside shoes, often leading to pain, redness, and swelling.

What Causes Bunions?

While tight or ill-fitting shoes were once thought to be the main cause, bunions can also develop due to:

  • Family history or inherited foot structure

  • Developmental abnormalities of the foot

  • Arthritis or other joint conditions

  • Foot biomechanics, such as flat feet or excessive pronation

Wearing narrow or high-heeled shoes can make bunions worse, but they aren’t always the root cause.

Managing and Treating Bunions

Mild to moderate bunion pain can often be managed without surgery.
Conservative treatment options include:

  • Wearing wide, supportive shoes that don’t place pressure on the bunion

  • Using protective bunion pads or sleeves to reduce rubbing and discomfort

  • Applying ice to relieve pain and swelling

  • Consulting a podiatrist for footwear advice and orthotic support

In more severe cases — when pain persists or the bunion interferes with daily activity — surgical correction may be recommended. Surgical options can vary, from shaving excess bone to realigning the affected joint. Your podiatrist can refer you to a specialist for assessment if needed.
